Selden, NY – The Monroe Lady Mustangs and the Hostos Caimans won the 2008 Region XV Basketball Tournament on March 2 hosted by Suffolk County Community College –Selden.
In the first game of the day the top seeded and # 1 nationally ranked Lady Mustangs of Monroe College took on the # 3 seed Lady Clippers of Suffolk County Community College. Monroe dominated from the start, never trailing once, on their way to a 75-53 win and 5th straight Region XV Championship. Monroe improves to 28-2 on the season and has now won 103 straight Region XV games with their last loss coming on December 22, 2003 to Hostos Community College. Suffolk ends their season with a record of 16-5.
Monroe was led by Region XV Player of the Year and Tournament MVP Monet Johnson. Johnson finished with a game high 24 points and teammate Tierra Cleaves chipped in with 12. Suffolk was led by Shatima Greer and Natasha Davis who both finished with 17 points.
The Lady Mustangs now advance to the NJCAA Division III Nationals, which begins on March 13 at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York.
In the second game of the day the # 7 seed Hostos Community College Caimans took on the # 1 seed and # 3 nationally ranked Clippers of Suffolk County Community College. Hostos took control of the game early and led going in to halftime by a score of 26-20. In the second half the Caimans pushed their lead to as many as 11 points but the Clippers would not go away quietly.
With 40 seconds left in the game, Clarence Alonzo stepped to the line for Suffolk and hit 2 free throws to tie the game at 53. Hostos ran down the clock and Tournament MVP, Dayshawn Long hit a three pointer from the corner before the shot clock expired and with 6 seconds left in the game. Dyshaun Flournoy attempted a desperation three at the buzzer but came up short and Hostos took home the championship.
Nick Lopez of Hostos was the game's high scorer pouring in 19 points and Clarence Alonzo led the way for Suffolk with 15 points.
With the win Hostos improves to 16-14 on the season and now moves on to the NJCAA Division III Nationals which begins March 13 at SUNY Delhi in Delhi, New York. With the loss the Clippers season comes to an end with a record of 28-4.
